Nick’s New Haven Style Pizza, Boca Raton FL
Ok, so I’ll admit it. I didn’t know what “New Haven Style” pizza was until I visited Nick’s in Boca Raton. According to their website, “New Haven-style pizza, locally known as “APIZZA,” is a style of Neapolitan pizza common in and around New Haven, Connecticut. What really sets New Haven-style pizza apart from other styles is its thin crust. Brick oven cooking makes the crust very crispy and chewy throughout, New Haven-style pizzerias always make sure that they use a balance of sauce, cheese, and toppings. Use of the term “apizza”.”
I visited Nick’s twice. The first time I ordered the pizza without cheese – something they call “Plain Crust.” Basically a thin crust topped with a layer of their sauce, a pinch of Romano cheese and oregano. Got to say, I was a fan. As promised, the pizza was “well done” with a crispy crust and a char around the edge of the pie. The sauce wasn’t sweet but it wasn’t too tart either. I didn’t think I would enjoy a pie without sauce, but this was a welcome change.
On my second visit, I was with some other folks so we tried a couple different pies. One Pepperoni and one with peppers, onions and sausage. Both were done just right and I scored props from my dining companions for suggesting the joint tucked in between Abe & Louie’s and Hooters.
In addition to the pizza, we split salads which easily feed two people each. Everything in the salads were fresh and crisp. There are other items on the menu, but why try something else when you’re at a pizza place?
Both times I was there the joint was busy, with a slight wait for tables. Although their website says they take reservations, the night I called for a table of four, I was told they only take reservations for parties of six or more. Anyway, we only waited about 15 minutes for a table and hung out at the bar having a few drinks before dinner.
