Philippe By Philippe Chow, Boca Raton FL
What was one of my favorite restaurants in Boca Raton has suddenly closed its doors.
Philippe by Philippe Chow, located near the beach on Palmetto Park Road, was a massive restaurant with more seats than than the dining public could support.
I’m not a huge fan of Asian cuisine, but Philippe always delivered what I would call a “solid” meal. One of the favorites I used to enjoy was the Crispy Duck which was deboned table side and served with house pancakes, duck sauce and the usual scallions and cucumber. Always living up to the “crispy” in its name, the duck wasn’t too greasy or fatty making it simply delicious.
One thing I noted from many online reviews of Philippe, was people complained that the prices were too high. When compared to the chain Chinese and Japanese restaurants, Philippe was generally less or in-line with the competition. How it got the “too expensive” notation is beyond me.
Other favorites included the Chicken Jo-Lau which was a lightly battered, thinly pounded chicken breast served with a lemon butter sauce which many would compare to Chicken Francaise. The staple Beef and Brocolli was a good choice as well as several of the noodle dishes including the house pulled noodles served with a veal sauce.
Appetizers consisted of traditional dumplings, egg rolls, soups and salads which weren’t very unique but were a fair starter.
I’m told that the remaining South Florida Philippe in Miami Beach is going strong. When the craving for Crispy Duck hits, I’ll have to take the drive down and check out what the Miami location has to offer.
